Comodo MDC
- Secure up to 100 Fully Qualified Domain Names on a single certificate.
- Quickly Add and Replace domains on-the-fly with our streamlined PKI management system
- Shared Hosting Providers - Provide SSL security to shared hosting customers in single IP environments without the risk of domain name mismatch **
- Dedicated Web Hosts - Streamline operations by using one SSL certificate to secure all your sites
- Huge Savings over single certs – our flexible deposit options let you secure domains for as little as 240-280 each (FQDN)
PositiveSSL Multi-Domain SSL certificates (MDC's) allow enterprises and web hosts to secure multiple websites by including up to 100 domains within a single certificate. Enterprises can consolidate all their secure domains into a single certificate. For example: secure.mydomain.com; secure.mydomain.co.uk; secure.mydomain.net.
Similarly, your merchant customers with more than one online store can secure all their websites in a shared hosting environment with a single IP address without going to the expense of separate, dedicated servers, e.g. secure.myshop1.com; secure.myshop2.com; secure.myshop3.com. (Apache based web servers)
Web host providers offering shared hosting can, through the use of a Multi - Domain SSL Certificate, combine all their shared hosting customers onto a single platform and still offer those customers the ability to offer secure services over SSL. **
- The only method to provide the security and assurance of SSL in a shared hosting environment without the risk of name mismatch. **
- Extract higher revenues from shared hosting customers by offering SSL certification as part of your hosting packages. **
- Combine all your secure domains onto a single IP address on a single server - allowing you to maximize revenue per box. **
- Consolidating all secure domains onto one certificate means you benefit from a more streamlined and simple certificate management process.
- Combine all the secure international versions of your web site onto one single IP address, e.g. mydomain.com; mydomain.co.uk; mydomain.de; mydomain.es, etc.**
- Lower price per domain makes MDC a more cost effective means of securing multiple sites than separate, single server certificates for any web-server platform across both dedicated and shared/virtual hosting.*
Convenience of a single Certificate:
Whether you are a large company or a web host, the benefits of MDC's are apparent. Through a single certificate you can secure up to 100 fully qualified domains or websites on a single IP address.
For example, one Multi-Domain Certificate for a single IP address can be used for:
https://secure.website1.com
https://secure.website1.co.uk
https://www.website.com
https://secure.website2.com
https://login.website2.com
https://any-domain.any-tld
A Multi-Domain Certificate ensures that you need not worry about the technical efforts, cost and time involved in managing multiple certificates on your server.
The need for Multi-Domain Certificates
Regular SSL Certificates are issued for a single FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). The domain using the certificate has to have its own unique external IP address from which to be served. In practice, this means that if you have multiple domains on a single IP address/server, then you had to install a separate certificate on each domain you wanted to secure.
The reason for this is the use of 'Host-Headers'. They allow a web server to use a single IP address to serve many separate sites with different FQDNs. They do this by identifying the incoming request for a webpage, and routing it to the correct site accordingly.
When an SSL connection is initiated, the server must send a certificate to the client - before it knows the host-header of the request. The only identifying piece of data it has is the requested IP address. As such, two or more sites on one IP address cannot use different SSL certificates. The other issue in a server environment like this is cost. Having a single server with many hosted sites on different FQDNs can be costly to implement SSL. MDC's can offer full SSL capability at a significantly reduced cost-per-domain.
Speed of Issuance & Validation Levels:
PositiveSSL MDC certificates can be issued within minutes of a successful application with our 100% online processing system. Instead of waiting days or weeks your certificate is generated almost immediately to provide you with a secure server in the fastest time possible.
PositiveSSL MDC's provide domain validation but do not authenticate the business behind the online business. However, in order to provide critical identity assurance for your site, every PositiveSSL MDC comes with FREE registration in IdAuthority. IdAuthority is world's first and unique real-time identity assurance service developed by Comodo that allows website identities to be verified against registry and public data. This validation process delivers identity assurance so customers will trust you and be confident buying on your site.
Coverage:
Browser ubiquity is a key element when choosing an SSL provider. A key component of a CA's operation is acceptance of a CA's certificates within browsers, e.g. Internet Explorer, FireFox Opera etc. This is enabled by Root Keys which these providers incorporate into the certificate root stores of their browsers. Once a Root Key is a trusted Root Key - any digital certificates issued from that Root Key Certification Authority will be trusted as a legitimate.
Comodo root keys are built into all the major browsers so they are inherently trusted by 99.3% of the current Internet population.
Industry Leading Expert Support:
Comodo is renowned for its industry leading customer care and technical support. As a valued SSL customer you can expect both telephone and email support for any issues you may face or questions you may have during any stage of applying for, installing or using your SSL Certificate.
Notes
** Both IIS and Apache based web servers support the MDC when used in a 'standard' hosting environment where each site has its own unique external IP - administrators will benefit from the convenience of using a single certificate to secure all their domains and enjoy a reduced price per domain over single certificates.
Securing multiple websites with an MDC in a shared hosting/virtual hosting environment is recommended for Apache web servers only. IIS cannot officially use the MDC for virtual hosting on a single IP and Microsoft have not chosen to official support any method of implementing such functionality.
